Need an Audio Checkup? Try the EastWest Audiobodyshop

April 14, 2011 by George 1 Comment

Working on audio in a home studio spans a wide range of environments. You can go super low tech and put up room dividers and blankets or record in a closet full of clothes. You can go halfway and get your walk in closet built out for isolation. Or you can go all in and build your own audio kingdom complete with Whisper Room and top notch sound proofing. In any case, you will likely need some advice on how to best handle the building of such isolation, how to eliminate bass and reflection, and more.

Enter two of the great audio minds in the voiceover business, George Whittam of El Dorado Recording Services in Los Angeles, and Dan Q. Lenard in Buffalo, NY. Each of them are acknowledged gurus in the world of audio treatment for voiceover (I had the pleasure of meeting Dan at Faffcon 2 this year, and worked with him briefly on my own microphone/preamp issue). Together, they have come up with an outstanding service: the EastWest Audiobodyshop.

Scheduled on Sundays, George and Dan answer questions and calls through a Ustream

session, listen to samples of audio from voice artists, and make suggestions about what can be done to make your audio as pristine as possible. You simply will not find a free resource better than this for finding out about fixing or improving the audio in your studio. You can see an hour long example here.

George and Dan schedule these shows on Sundays at 8 PM Eastern/ 5 PM Pacific. Do yourself a favor, sign up for a Ustream account and check them out. You will not be disappointed and you may learn some valuable information for your hour of investment. They also have a Facebook Page to link to so you will know the schedule and what they are going to talk about. and just this week, George announced that past episodes are now available in podcast form. Really, no excuse not to check them out.

CourVo and your Social Networking Footprint

April 13, 2011 by George Leave a Comment

footprint on the sandphoto © 2006 ezioman | more info (via: Wylio)Dave Courvoisier is a social networking guru for the voiceover set. He digs and digs to find the tips, techniques, and opportunities voice talent should look into to further themselves in the social networking scene. He also never seems to sleep, which amazes me to no end.

Dave has listed out his 10 Ways to Enhance Your Online VO Footprint, and after looking at them, they are applicable to anyone trynig to establish their social media identity. A couple of my favorites are the folloing:

2)  ENGAGE. Don’t just lurk.  Be known. This doesn’t mean you have to be chatty every day, all day.  Just pop up once in a while when you can contribute (see #1), and show yourself

This step is often the hardest for newbies to the social media world, because the community you are entering, whatever it is, can seem imposing and already well knit. But there is rarely a community that will not welcome new voices that add to the discussion.

9)  SHARE SOMETHING PERSONAL once in a while.  You don’t have to give your kids’ Social Security Numbers…but you might offer that you just finished a big project, and it feels good to be done.  Some think these posts are frivolous, but I differ.  When done right, they reveal a window into your personality, and you’ll find sometimes you get the most responses to THESE types of offerings (BTW, VO Terry Daniel is a master at this, so ask him how he does it.)

This is the real balancing act. Dave has posted in the past about the balance between sharing something out of joy and just posting your many and varied accomplishments just to show how good you are. Hence the “once in a while” part of the statement.

Go read the rest, and see how you can implement them in your social networking strategy. They make sense, and can definiely increase your visibility.

April 12, 2011 by George Leave a Comment

When Time Warner Cable launched its contest for four TV personalities to host a new talk show series, they also needed just the right voice for their promotional ads. If you want to be “in the spotlight”, catch the ad on TV or visit Time Warner Cable’s website. You’ll hear a popular male voice talent explain the “Born to Shine” contest for the new series that will air this fall.

Voice actor George Washington III, was selected by New York marketing firm Ruth: Edelman for Time Warner Cable’s ad campaign promoting the contest. You may have already seen the “Born to Shine” ads on TV, which have aired in Charlotte and New York. Later this year, they will also air in Dallas and Los Angeles, as the contest continues in these cities.

Time Warner Cable explains the series and the contest: “We are on a search to identify four aspiring television personalities to host “Born to Shine”, a new talk show series where you could interview prominent African-Americans who are paving the way in pop culture, music, films, sports and the community. The show will air on Time Warner Cable On Demand this fall.”

Do Lower Rates Mean More Clients?

April 12, 2011 by George

Freelance Folder (@FreelanceFolder) is a resource every freelancer should be following regardless of your area of expertise. A new article about rate setting is a great example: should you lower your rates in order to get more business? The topic of rates is always a hot one for voice actors, so as always, that depends. But you must be careful about setting rates so low that you can fall into a couple of traps. Read this article and let me know what you think.

Encouraging Words for Today’s Working Voice Actor | Voices.com

April 12, 2011 by George

I’m pretty sure that I have a rather pollyanna-ish view about getting into the voiceover field. I encourage people to look into it, but with open eyes: no one becomes Don LaFontaine, Nolan north, or Bob Souer overnight. It’s going to take time and effort. But if you have skills, there is work out there. Stephanie Ciccarellli has a post up on Voices.com about the relative abundance of work out there. Again, it’s not always going to be an earth shattering worldwide influencer….but it is work that will get you on your way to the next thing.See it on Scoop.it, via voiceover and voice acting
